Certified Appellate Specialist


Scott Davenport is a Certified Appellate Specialist who has represented municipalities, insurers, and individuals in civil rights and general liability matters for more than three decades. A member of American Mensa, Mr. Davenport has received the AV rating by Martindale-Hubbell, which is the highest rating an attorney can receive for legal quality and ethics. He regularly appears in both state and federal appellate courts, has served as counsel of record in more than 500 appellate matters, and obtained a summary reversal in the United States Supreme Court in Los Angeles County v. Rettele, 550 U.S. 609 (2007).

Mr. Davenport began his career with the Department of Justice as a Deputy Attorney General where he represented the State of California in approximately 150 appellate matters. He served as a judicial research attorney / intern for both the United States District Court and the California Court of Appeal. Mr. Davenport served the California State Bar Committee of Bar Examiners for four years, including one year as the Chair. He also volunteers as an Appellate Settlement Officer for California Court of Appeal and was a consultant for CBS Studio's Television Series "The Guardian," which resulted in the creation of a recurring character which was named after him. He is a 32nd Degree Mason and a Shriner.

Prior to his current position with Jones and Mayer, Mr. Davenport served as the General Counsel and Practice Area Leader of the 12-lawyer Appellate Team for a national law firm. As the head of the appellate team, Mr. Davenport focused on representing municipalities and law enforcement officers in civil rights litigation; and as General Counsel, he provided advice to the partnership on legal and ethical issues, represented the firm in malpractice and state bar actions, reviewed contracts, and assisted in responding to subpoenas against the firm.
